The job of songs -film

Schmitz’s approach is to look at traditional music’s humanity in an effort to tease out its profundities. The cinematography here is excellent and frames Doolin’s beauties well.

The Job of Songs

Travellers from all over the world gather in the village of Doolin, County Clare, hoping to connect with their Irish heritage through traditional Irish music. But things are changing: facing rapid modernisation at the hands of tourism, confronting depression and mental health issues, and grappling with a history of colonisation and oppression, the people of Doolin turn to music to find solace. Musicians share the rich history of place and their love of the musical traditions. Together with their listeners they find community through the strumming of a guitar, the beating of a bodhran, and the sharing of a song. US director Lila Schmitz explores how music can be a liberating force, unleashing emotions and articulating unspoken words.

With reflections and music from Luka Bloom, Katie Theasby, Christy Mc Namara, Anne Rynne, Christy Barry and others.

North Circular film

North Circular

Dublin’s North Circular Road defines the working-class north inner city as it curves from the Phoenix Park in the West to Dublin Bay in the East, passing parks, barracks, asylums, stadia and prisons along the way,

This musical odyssey, traveling the length of Dublin’s North Circular Road, from the Phoenix Park to Dublin Port, explores the history, music and residents of this richly storied street. Infused with warmth and Dublin wit, the film celebrates the power of community which fuels the battle to save the legendary Cobblestone Pub, and the celebrations for Kellie Harrington’s homecoming. With musical turns from John Francis Flynn, Séan Ó Túama, Eoghan O’Ceannabháin, Ian Lynch, and Gemma Dunleavy.

The film is shot in black and white Academy ratio (4:3), an aesthetic choice made to bind together the disparate tales and reference the echoes of history.

And…it’s a musical where the folk music of the area is employed as a narrative storytelling device.

All you need is death -film

All You Need is Death

A young couple, who are a part of a secret organization, travel at night with the desire to discover forbidden knowledge. They believe that living, modern alchemy is contained in old, forgotten songs. When they find an elderly, mysterious woman who sings songs that have never been heard before, they open the door to an ancient evil and madness.

Anna (Simone Collins) and Aleks (Charlie Maher) travel around Ireland seeking out rare traditional songs, the lesser heard and known the better, that they can then sell at secretive and highly competitive auctions to interested parties. The enigmatic woman in charge of these events directs them to Rita Concannon (a striking cameo from Olwen Fouéré), the last in a line of women to have handed a song forbidden to men down through generations, one that has never been recorded.

Aleks’s surreptitious taping of the song (co-written by Lankum’s Ian Lynch) sets in motion a spiralling, Stricklandesque series of cosmic events.

The debut feature from eclectic Irish documentarian Paul Duane (Natan, 2013; While You Live, Shine, 2018; Best Before Death, 2019) sees him combine his wide array of interests to create a distinctly Irish entry to the folk horror canon.

This was a lovely script, cheeky and magical with love glistening through it. It was great to be a part of and fun to do. Really looking forward to seeing it.

A Greyhound of a Girl

Mary is nine years old and has an insuppressible passion for cooking: she dreams of becoming a great chef. Her grandmother Emer, with whom she has a very special relationship, encourages her to make this dream come true. But every path has its pesky obstacles and facing them turns into quite an adventure.

Mary thus begins a journey across the barriers of time, in which four generations of women come together and get to know each other truly and deeply.

A delicate coming-of-age story, sprinkled with irony.
