Brent Ó Caiside is a talented musician known for his sean nós singing and driving bodhrán in bands The Soap Pig, Droichead and solo, all which project his passion for traditional Irish music and song. Born and raised in the farming community of Oak Grove in North Carolina, Brent has been surrounded by storytellers since birth. He was captivated by stories his father, grandpa and local elders told daily as they gathered at his Grandpa “Red’s” country store. By the age of 10, he had heard all kinds of stories including adventures in foreign lands, farming secrets and many mischievous tales from the community. These storytellers and their stories enriched his life and shaped his sense of adventure and imagination.
Combined with his own journey, Brent has a repertoire of stories that include elements of myth, legend and adventure while combining sean nós (old style) traditional songs in Gaelic as well as the bodhrán and shruti box. He draws inspiration from the oral traditions, people and landscapes of his life from the rich storytelling cultures of North Carolina, Ireland and Oulu.
Brent tells stories in his own voice as if talking to a friend, which is how he views the audience, like a circle of friends gathered to listen and share stories.
His debut CD (2023), The Port Seal, includes traditional, adapted and original stories with Gaelic Songs.
It is a joy to the ear and to the senses.
